Trailing Drawdown vs Static Drawdown: Which Prop Firm Rule Fits Your Style?

What static drawdown is, how it differs from trailing, and which futures prop firms actually offer it in 2026 (most don't). Worked examples and a fit checklist.

What is the difference between trailing and static drawdown? Trailing drawdown raises your failure line as equity peaks; static drawdown keeps a fixed floor. On a 25k futures prop account, picking the wrong model can fail you after a green morning you gave back in the afternoon.

Pick the wrong drawdown model and a green week still ends in a failed account. Trailing drawdown and static drawdown sound like compliance jargon until you watch your liquidation line move up after a single morning spike.

This guide explains what static drawdown means, how trailing drawdown behaves on prop firm accounts, and how to choose between them when you trade on NinjaTrader 8.

Definitions in one paragraph

Maximum drawdown is how far your account equity can fall from a reference point before the firm closes you.

  • Trailing drawdown moves the reference point up as you make new equity highs. Give back too much from the peak and you fail even if you are still above your starting balance.
  • Static drawdown (or end-of-day static models) keeps a fixed floor until you hit a payout milestone or the firm resets the rule. Your liquidation line does not chase every intraday high.

Firms label these differently. Read the exact definition in the program PDF. “EOD trailing” is not the same as “intraday trailing.”

Side-by-side comparison

Factor Trailing drawdown Static drawdown
Liquidation line Rises with new highs Fixed until rule changes
Rewards early spikes Punishes them if you give back Less sensitive to one big morning
Best for Traders who lock profits quickly Steady daily earners, swing holds
Risk on 25k One +$900 day then -$400 chop More room to absorb giveback

Trailing drawdown: how it feels live

You start a $50k eval with a $2,000 trailing max loss.

  1. Monday: +$600 by lunch. Your trail lifts. The distance to failure shrinks from the new high, not from $50k flat.
  2. Tuesday: -$350 morning chop. You are fine on P&L for the week, but closer to breach than yesterday’s spreadsheet suggested.
  3. Wednesday: you size up to “get it back.” The trail does not care about your narrative.

Trailing models reward traders who bank gains or stop when ahead. They punish the classic pattern: huge open, slow bleed, revenge size into the close.

On NinjaTrader 8, track realized + open P&L in the Control Center during the session. Do not wait for the firm’s dashboard to update if you are near the limit.

Static drawdown: how it feels live

Static (or fixed-floor) models anchor failure to a defined level, often starting balance minus max loss until payout.

  1. Monday: +$600. Floor stays put.
  2. Tuesday: -$350. You still have the same nominal cushion from the fixed reference.
  3. Wednesday: another +$400 day. Floor may still be unchanged until you request payout or pass a phase.

Static is not “easier.” Some programs compensate with tighter daily loss limits or higher eval fees. You are trading different risk, not free risk.

Worked example (simplified numbers)

Assume max loss allowance = $1,500 from a $25k start.

Trailing

Event Equity Approx. fail level (trail $1,500)
Start $25,000 $23,500
+$800 day $25,800 $24,300
-$600 next day $25,200 $24,300 (unchanged)
-$900 day $24,300 At breach

You are still +$300 vs start, but the trail killed the account.

Static

Event Equity Fail level (static $1,500)
Start $25,000 $23,500
+$800 day $25,800 $23,500
-$600 next day $25,200 $23,500
-$900 day $24,300 $23,500 (still alive)

Same trades. Different rule. Different outcome.

Which futures prop firms have static drawdown? (2026)

Short answer: very few. Most futures prop firms moved to end-of-day (EOD) trailing drawdown, and many “static” claims on review sites are out of date or refer to forex/CFD firms.

Firm / plan Drawdown type What that means in practice
Phidias – Express to Live Static ($650 on 50K) Fixed floor from day one; no intraday trailing
Phidias – Fundamental EOD trailing Floor moves up at session close only
Topstep – Trading Combine EOD trailing, then locks Max loss trails until it reaches your starting balance, then stays put
Topstep – Express Funded EOD trailing, then locks Max loss locks at $0 once your balance reaches the buffer (e.g. $2,000 on 50K)
Most others (Apex, MFF, Take Profit Trader, Bulenox, Alpha Futures) Intraday or EOD trailing No static plan we could verify

“Trailing then locks” is the closest thing most traders will get to static. Once the floor locks, it behaves exactly like static drawdown. The hard part is surviving the trailing phase until it locks, which is where the giveback math above matters.

Rules change often, sometimes monthly. Before you buy, open the firm’s own rules page for your exact plan and account size and confirm the drawdown type. Don’t trust a comparison table (including this one) over the firm’s current terms.

Which model fits your strategy?

Choose trailing if:

  • You take quick partials and rarely hold full reversion days
  • Your average winner is small relative to max loss
  • You already use hard daily stops in NinjaTrader

Choose static if:

  • You have multi-hour holds and normal giveback after trends
  • Your equity curve is lumpy but positive over 10+ days
  • You sized for a 25k account comparison and need predictable floor math

Avoid guessing if:

  • You have not journaled 20 sessions in sim with the same size rules
  • You switch models every time you fail an eval

NinjaTrader 8 habits that matter for both models

  1. Default quantity in Chart Trader matches your max loss math.
  2. Auto-close or alerts when open P&L hits a personal cap (stricter than the firm’s cap).
  3. Separate workspaces per account so you do not fat-finger orders on the wrong connection.
  4. Fix feed issues first. A Rithmic logon failure mid-session is how traders breach while distracted.

Pair drawdown discipline with payout rules. A 50% consistency cap can block withdrawals even when drawdown math looks fine.

What is static drawdown in trading?
A fixed maximum loss measured from a defined reference balance, not from your intraday high water mark.

What is trailing drawdown in a prop firm?
A max loss that follows your highest equity point. New highs lift the floor; losses from that peak count faster.

Which is better, static or trailing drawdown?
Neither is universally better. Match the rule to how your strategy gives back profit.

Does Topstep have trailing drawdown?
Yes, end-of-day trailing. In the Trading Combine the max loss trails your end-of-day high until it reaches your starting balance, then locks. In the Express Funded Account it locks at $0. Verify the current rule set on Topstep’s site before you buy.
